Certification issues:
Brandon Sotor from Ferrisburgh Fire Department took exam, was activated, told one year to retest by his Training Officer and several EMS personnel. He called VTEMS and was told that he had only 90 days to test and was out of compliance. He is asking for extension to test from board. After much discussion about whether the board has the ability to extend the testing date and whether retesting could occur in 90 days or 1 year. The board decided to recommend to state to extend. Brandon will make arrangements to test with EMT-B class this week and Becca will follow-up with EMS Dept. on rules and regs.
Jason Wolstenholme from UVM. His Basic and I expired in January. He moved to NY and didn’t realize that he would be moving back to VT so soon. Board recommended to extend certification. He will retest when necessary and will check with VTEMS to check when he needs to test.
Mike Storey from SMRS. Greg C. was representing him. Mike is an RN who currently has his EMT-B. He has not been a practicing EMT-I since 1999, but uses these skills daily in his job. He is requesting that the board recommend to the state reinstatement. There was some discussion about the differences in pre-hospital vs hospital care. Greg clarified that Mike does run on the truck for at least a full weekend about monthly and is currently an EMT-B and assists EMT-Is on truck with materials preparation.
Treasurer’s report: $456 spent to pay for recertification (Peter K., food, drink)- no other report tonight
Medical Direction: Peter W. - no report, still on track for EMT-I ’03 protocols to start 1/04.
FAHC: Gil
The white board of patients is no longer in effect. This has changed to computer system which will be filled in as patients enter. Please be patient as the ER staff and EMS get used to the new system.
Pat M. posed a question asking if there are problems with observations? Peter W. answered don’t be afraid to approach an attending or a nurse. They will involve those observing if aware of what they want to observe.
Please remember if you give report to attending physician that report must also be given to a nurse.
When bringing a patient to triage and the patient is able to give information and is stable let the triage nurse know that they are there, but don’t worry about giving a detailed report. Leaving your patient in the triage waiting area and advising the triage nurse that they are there is considered transferring care. However if there are considerations that the triage nurse needs to know about don’t be afraid to let them know that you need to give them a detailed report. Can seek assistance from charge nurse or radio room staff.
Equipment note: things that are larger such as vacuum splints should be being placed in the decon room if they do not fit in the lockers. Kirsten will send an e-mail to the housekeeping staff making sure they are aware of this and do not place in ambulance bay where they may slide into traffic.
The construction happening with the ambulance entrance to the hospital has been delayed. We will be advised when it begins.
Zoll M series does not work with the download equipment in the radio room. Kirsten is working on this with the Zoll representative.
Training committee:
4 training officers were present at training officer meeting. Jason would like to do these meetings quarterly.
The state office will be coming out to train evaluators. To be discussed further at January meeting.
Jason is setting up spring recertificaiton dates.
Pat: Day EMT-B class has 18-20 students all completed successfully. Evening EMT-B and EMT-I classes going well.
Spring EMT Refresher applications are due to Chris McCarthy
Applications for the Spring EMT-B class are due to Pat.
Training officers should give Jackie Goss the numbers left for people who still need to transition to I-03 curriculum.
Air National Guard recert request for exam in January. 8-12am. Question posed if this falls under our small exam limits for state testing? Pat stated he checked in with the state office about this and was assured no problems with holding during business day.
Transition class is testing next week.
MCI committee: Becca
We are in the process of updating forms and putting together a binder of materials. When draft materials are done will share with Fire Departments and board for feedback prior to providing to services..
Greg C. brought a grant form and asked if district would like to use it to hold MCI. Kirsten asked that FAHC be involved so we can have beginning to end? Becca stated that at this time others would need to lead this effort. Noone expressed interest in organizing district-wide MCI.
Policies/Procedures: Lee
Licenses are done, no other business. There is a plan in place for providing Charlotte Rescue with support.
Logistics: Lee
None
Heavy Rescue/Fire Department: In the early spring the chiefs will be looking at Heavy Rescue response lists and updating.
Interstate Responses: Exits #13-16 Fire, EMS, PD will be using caution tape to mark cars and no cars will be removed during heavy traffic times. 911 operators will be asking callers if the car is marked. Marked cars will not have a EMS/FD response. The question was posed why only at these exits. Answer: seems to be heaviest traveled- perhaps this needs to be adjusted based on where most accidents occur (South)? Rich P. advised that this is now extended to Exit #17. Doug will invite the new person in charge of this effort at VTSPD to the January meeting.
Old Business: none
New Business: none
Next meeting 1/8/04 in Hall of Fame Room (Tarrant) at SMC.
