UVM Rescue "Pride, Service and Committment" since 1973.
(The following information was submitted by Alisa Leib on August 31, 1999)
Service Description: UVM Rescue was established in 1973.
It began with a small group of students who rode along with the campus police equipped
with little more than basic first aid materials. Over the years UVM Rescue has evolved
into a state certified, nationally recognized, ALS ambulance service completely staffed
and operated by University of Vermont students. It is in operation 24 hours a day, 365
days a year.
Our primary responsibility is to provide emergency medical care to the University of
Vermont, the city of South Burlington, and parts of Interstate 89 and 189. We also respond
secondary into the city of Burlington, Shelburne, Winooski, and other surrounding
communities as part
of a mutual aid plan.
UVM Rescue responds to over 1800 calls per year. The calls can range in severity from
students that are too ill to walk to the Student Health Center, to life-threatening
emergencies such as poisonings, multi-traumas, respiratory difficulties, and cardiac
arrests.
Our training program is highly respected and fairly intense. After a member is
accepted following an application and interview process, they must begin a training
cirriculum that lasts several months. Part of this training which is unique to UVM Rescue
is that we require that all members become dispatchers, as we are one of few
self-dispatching ambulances. After becoming a dispatcher the new member will move on to
becoming a "medic". This roll basically elaborates on some of the skills taught
in the Vermont EMT cirriculum. Upon completion of the "medic's checklist" they
are on the road with full UVM Rescue member status.
UVM Rescue is a fully volunteer service seeking motivated and interested students who
would like to take advantage of this unique opportunity. There are few college squads that
can offer this kind of experience and call volume. Students and community members
can also get involved by taking the Emergency Care course at UVM that is taught by UVM
Rescue members.
