VTEMSD#3 Training Committee Minutes for 8 March, 2001

The meeting was called to order at 1835 hours by Chair Greg Thweatt. Those in attendance were:

Introductions:

Jon Fenimore, new training officer for VARS.

Review Agenda: The chair briefly reviewed the agenda for the meeting.

Approval of Minutes

Motion to accept minutes of Feb 8, 2000 meeting by Bill, second by Deb.

Amend Announcements, Recertification: "Pat Malone explained that VTEMS contacted him explaining that State had been asked to set a cap of 40 for Feb 15th recertification date and that Pat advised that this cap could be exceeded as more that 40 applications were received by the State."

Additionally, change wording of "options have been suggested to State (testing by services, more dates throughout the year, etc) and have been turned down for a variety of reasons" to reflect "that the State would rather not have non-district recertification testing sites conducted."

Motion passed with amendments.

Announcements:

Next meeting will be held on April 12, 2001 at 1830 hours, location TBA. Annual meeting with elections.

FAHC Case Review: March 20th, case reviews.

Approved Courses:

First Responder Course (conducted at MBFD): 15 students in the class, taught by Christi Champagne.

EMT-B: Second exam was last night. Students now have their skill sheets for check off. Class canceled for Hazmat last week. March 28th at 1800 hours in Rowell 103, Steve Staudeman conducting a PEPP course.

EMT-I: Second exam on Monday, started venipuncture.

Refresher Course: Completed last month. Comments and reviews were positive. Thank You Kate. Next time will have testing incorporated into the course schedule.

Recertification Testing: Tested 81 people, great turnout for helpers. Two test sheets lost, found one – other person left the test without telling anyone. Twenty four hours after the test a person helping out reported sustaining an injury – shoulder dislocation. Person was a junior member on a service. Outcome – service is working with parents to resolve. District asked practical instructor and another student to make written statements. Need to think about what to do if this happens again. Are services aware of who is going to testing? Are services familiar with their insurance coverage? Suggestion – have services fill out a questionnaire about insurance coverage and have sub-committee review.

IC Course: Chris McCarthy and Craig Lameroux are new IC’s.

EMS Conference: March 29 – April 1.

Elections next month.

Old Business:

First Responder/ECA Instruction: 108 surveys returned, VTEMS advised that we have 678 providers in VTEMSD#3 (16% return)

Modules – proposed module 1. Negotiating with IC. Module 1 & 2 combined, to start in May.

Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) – recent meeting, Feb 21. Mo Leahy, Becca Webb, Peter Kiebel, Paul Gutwin, and Dan Manz met to discuss how to help services address PAD. This group is working on a packet for services that would address: 1. How to handle questions from interested organizations; 2. How to handle organizations who have advised that they have purchased an AED; 3. How to outreach the community to help educate organizations on PAD; 4. What to do once the PAD is obtained by an organization (on-going training and protocol suggestions) A first draft is expected in April in time for EMS Month in May. Next meeting is March 14, 1600 hrs @ SBFD Station #1. Current PAD organizations – Verizon in South Burlington and US Marshall Office, Federal Building in Burlington.

New Business:

Proposed Summer EMT-B course: End of May to end of July. Friday evenings and all day Saturday and Sunday of every other week. Class size of 16, capped at 18. Contact Pat.

Next meeting will be a dinner meeting at the Inn at Essex at 1830 hours. Training committee, District Board and Service Directors are expected to meet together. Annual election meeting.
