How do I register for the course?
You must be currently affiliated with a Vermont EMS service licensed at the EMT-I (or higher) level. You must complete and submit an application that is signed by your sponsoring EMS service. Click on application to download an application. All applications must be complete and include proof of an EMT-B National Registry (NR) written exam score. If you have less than an 80 score, or have not taken a NR written exam you will need to take an entrance exam.
How can I obtain proof of my NR Written score if I can not find my results?
If you do not have a record of your National Registry EMT-B written exam, you may request a confirmation from the National Registry directly. To do so, send your request including your name, social security number and National Registry EMT number via:
E-mail: tmarkwood@nremt.org
Fax: (614) 888-8920
Postal Mail: National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, Rocco V. Morando Building, 6610 Busch Blvd., P.O. Box 29233, Columbus, Ohio 43229
A copy of their reply must be attached to this application.
Are there deadlines for when I must submit my application?
If you are sponsored by a VTEMSD#3 service you have until the August 12th District Board meeting to submit your application. After that date all applications will be accepted including non-VTEMSD#3 requests and will be accepted on a first com-first served basis. Please talk with your respective training officer as soon as possible in the event that the course fills up before the October deadline. Non-VTEMSD#3 applications can be submitted prior to August 12th, however, they will not be processed until after the August 12th date and if space is available.
How much does the course cost?
Currently the cost of the course is still to be determined. The fee does NOT include the text book.
Where do I send my application (including proof of NR Written Exam score and payment)?
Mail the completed application to:
Initiative for Rural EMS
University of Vermont
EMT-I 03 Course
665 Spear St.
Burlington, VT 05405
Please use the approved application (do NOT use applications from prior years) and only mail completed applications to the above address.
Do I need to take an entrance exam to attend the course?
Applicants only need to take an entrance exam if they scored less than 80% (that is 79% or less) on their NR EMT-Basic written exam.
What if I never took a NR EMT-B certification exam?.
You will need to take the entrance exam if you have never taken an NR EMT-Basic written exam for certification. The Vermont Recertification exam score is NOT an acceptable substitution.
What will the entrance exam cover?
The exam will be 150 questions and based on the NR distribution of questions:
The questions will be based on the
“EMT-Basic Self-Assessment Exam Prep Review Manual”, Mistovich & Kuvlesky, Brady, 2003.
This text book is currently out of stock (according to the publisher), however, it may be purchased via online book vendors. See the FetchBook.Info link below to purchase this book or others like it. Participants can obtain other similar text books if they wish to prepare for the entrance exam. Here are a couple of sites that may help:
Places to purchase resources:

Prehospital Emergency Care, 6th Ed, online supplemental material. Choose a topic and then choose from multiple choice or true/false questions.
Quick Quizzes developed by Valerie Defrance
How many times can I take the entrance exam?
Each participant may take the entrance exam once per course – there will be no re-takes.
Can I take the course for UVM credit?
If you are a registered UVM student (full or part time) you may register for the course only after completing a Course Over-ride Form (available at the UVM Registrars Office). The course will be six (6) credits and the cost of the course does NOT cover these per credit costs. We are currently working with the Registrars office to determine the computer number and course number.
